Founded in 2001, the British vocal ensemble Stile Antico has established itself over time as one of the great interpreters of early and baroque music. After numerous successful recordings with Harmonia Mundi, they offer the latest instalment of their The Golden Renaissance on Decca, this time devoted to the English composer William Byrd… An essential composer whose 400th death anniversary is being celebrated this year.

The disc explores the music of Byrd’s last years with purity, clarity, and a beautiful balance. The Mass for four voices forms the principal thread, and the other pieces (a selection of motets from his Gradualia, works written for underground workshop, and sacred songs) are integrated harmoniously into it. A nice perspective.
