RecordingsIn a Strange Land

Glowing praise from Sunday Times for ‘In a Strange Land’

SP, Sunday Times (6th January, 2019)

The dozen voices of Stile Antico give achingly expressive performances of Elizabethan masterpieces, all informed by their composers’ Catholicism. Outstanding are Byrd’s Tristitia et anxietas and Quomodo cantabimus, and Robert Whyte’s Lamentations – but later pieces by the emigrés John Dowland, Peter Philips and Robert Dering make their mark. Huw Watkins’s recent work The Phoenix and the Turtle offers fine contrast.
