Stile Antico’s dozen voices sing with polished refinement a mixture of sophisticated Latin and more populist vernacular material on this disc. Alonso Lobo’s parody Missa Beata Dei Genitrix forms the recital’s heart, its movements interspersed with motets by Victoria, Morales and Guerrero (the piece that functioned as Lobo’s model), Spanish villancicos – equivalent to our carols – and works by Pedro Rimonte and Mateo Flecha.
