Music for Compline re-released to mark anniversary

17 December, 2014

In celebration of Stile Antico’s forthcoming tenth anniversary, the group’s debut disc, Music for Compline, has been re-released at budget price.

Following its success in the 2005 Early Music Network Young Artists’ Competition at the York Early Music Festival, Stile Antico was approached by Harmonia Mundi USA and invited to make its first recording. The resulting album, Music for Compline, was recorded in April 2006 and released early in 2007. The rest, as they say, is history: the disc was awarded the Diapason d’or de l’année, Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, CHOC du Monde de la Musique, and was nominated for a Grammy® Award. Following playtime on NPR in the US, it reached #2 in the US Billboard Classical Chart, #1 in the Amazon Classical Bestsellers list, and was chosen as one of Amazon’s discs of the year.

Music for Compline features music written for the final monastic service of the day by the greatest of Tudor composers, amongst them Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, John Sheppard and Robert White, alongside the first recording of the mighty antiphon Gaude, virgo mater Christi by John Aston. The disc is available through the Stile Antico website priced at just £6.99.
