Inspired by the Louvre’s exhibition ‘Figures de fou’, Stile Antico explores themes of madness in music spanning five centuries. Religious madness is investigated through fervent motets depicting Christ’s suffering in anguished detail; passionate madrigals represent the madness of love; and the musician’s role at court in helping the monarch explore deep melancholic emotions is investigated. The programme includes music for Charles V, son of Joanna ‘the Mad’, as well as Thomas Crecquillon’s Toutes les Nuitz, the madrigal depicted on the famous ‘Concert on an Egg’ painting, featured in the exhibition.
