Stile Antico offers workshops tailored to individual schools and levels of experience, allowing participants to hear live performances of a repertoire with which they are often unfamiliar, to explore its context, and to experience singing it themselves, coached by members of the group.
Made it easy to sing un-selfconsciously! Demonstrations were fantastic and groups were fun. History was v. interesting!
Our workshops are designed to complement the work of school music departments, giving pupils the opportunity to broaden their musical experience, knowledge and to develop their aural skills. There are presentations and discussions of the historical and social context of the music, and we explore the central aspects of its compositional technique. Most importantly, all participants are given the opportunity to rehearse and perform in small groups, encouraging good communication and team-work. By identifying and experimenting with the extraordinary range of possibilities open to the performer, participants gain a unique insight into the musical style.
Fun, friendly and imaginative. Fantastic demos and really enjoyable day.
A typical session begins with a brief performance by Stile Antico, followed by a thorough physical and vocal warm-up, and group singing. Members of the group give brief presentations and lead discussions about the historical context of the music which has been sung, and about the way it is composed, interspersed with further musical examples. After a break, a number of smaller groups are formed, and each is coached by one or more members of Stile Antico on a simple 16th or 17th-century motet. Participants are encouraged to make their own interpretative decisions, and exercise their imagination as widely as possible. At the end of the session, each group performs to the others, and there is a final opportunity for questions.
Very informative, good biscuits!
Requirements
Although we are able to work with students of widely differing experience, the ability to read music without difficulty is essential. However, no previous vocal training or choral experience is required. In order to be able to focus sufficiently on each individual, we limit numbers to thirty students per session. We also require a separate space for each small group.
