Live From London: Christmas
We were delighted to return for the Christmas 2021 edition of the acclaimed Live From London festival, joining a roster of wonderful artists to share beautifully filmed live performances with those who cannot join us in person.
Live From London once again assembled many of the world’s finest choral ensembles for a series of streamed concerts, filmed in front of live audiences from churches across London, and from venues in the US. The festival opened with a performance by hosts Voces8 (4th Dec), and continued with appearances by The Crossing (5th Dec), The King’s Singers (11th Dec), Apollo 5 (12th Dec), Voces8 (Messiah, 18th Dec), St Olaf College (19th Dec), Stile Antico (22nd Dec), I Fagiolini (24th Dec) and the Gabrieli Consort & Players (25th Dec). Four further concerts by the Gabrieli Consort & Players (26th, 27th Dec and 1st, 6th Jan) were available to view for an additional fee. All these concerts were available to view until 15th January 2022.
Stile Antico’s concert, A Renaissance Christmas, took place in the iconic church of St Martin-in-the-Fields. Inspired by the traditional service of Nine Lessons and Carols, we presented a beautiful sequence of festive music from the Renaissance interspersed with intimate, metaphysical verse by poets such as John Donne and George Herbert. From the exuberance of Praetorius’ Magnificat Quinti toni, which includes the carols In dulci jubilo and Joseph lieber, to the wonder and beauty of Tallis’ Videte miraculum, the performance is a veritable feast of words and music, culminating in John Sheppard’s spectacular setting of the famous passage from St John’s Gospel: “The word was made flesh and dwelt among us”.
