Toward the Dawn

Dartington Summer School

Great Hall, Dartington Hall, Totnes, United Kingdom

Performed in sections at appropriate times in the early and late evening, and early the following morning, our programme charts a course from twilight to sunrise, seductive and unsettling in equal measure. Taverner’s mighty Ave Dei Patris filia stands at the end of a delicious sequence of sacred music, chansons and madrigals by English and Continental composers including Byrd, Lassus and Tallis. Thrill to the spine-tingling sounds of Allegri’s beloved Miserere and enter into the glorious sound world of Nico Muhly’s Gentle Sleep, a haunting setting of words by Shakespeare, written especially for the twelve voices of Stile Antico.

At this time, tickets are limited to those taking part in Week One of Dartington Summer School.

Programme to include:

John Wilbye: Draw on sweet night
Robert White: Christe qui lux es IV
John Ward: Come sable night
William Byrd: Vigilate
Orlandus Lassus: Toutes le nuitz
Gregorio Allegri: Miserere mei
Nico Muhly: Gentle sleep
Thomas Tallis: O nata lux
Claudio Monteverdi: Ecco mormorar l’onde
John Taverner: Ave Dei Patris filia
